"The most important work was 'Elegy: Snow in June,' a concerto for cello and four percussionists. Madeleine Shapiro played the cello part with great intensity, admirably holding her own against the percussion battery." The New York Times
"Ms. Shapiro succeeded in bringing her audience right into the whispered tremulations and slides of Salvatore Sciarrino's 'Ai limiti della notte.'" The New York Times
"I admire Madeleine Shapiro's musicianship and her ability to work with others." John Cage
ModernWorks cellist and director Madeleine Shapiro presents unique recitals of recent music for cello, cello with tape and cello with live electronics taken from her repertoire of over 25 works. The program, called Voices, also incorporates short taped segments of each composer speaking about the work to be performed. These act as verbal program notes, helping to elucidate the music.
Madeleine, an accomplished teacher and director of the Contemporary Ensemble at the Mannes College of Music, can also conduct a variety of master classes, workshops and lecture-demonstrations for performers and composers.
