In the short time that the ensemble has been in existance, it has won critical acclaim for its 2 New York seasons. It has also presented 11 New York or United States premieres of works by both young, emerging composers, and established composers such as Luciano Berio, Iannis Xenakis and Bernard Rands.
The ensemble consists of a core of some of New York City's most prominent performers of 20th century music. All long-time colleagues, they have appeared together on series and festivals such as the Ravinnia Festival (Chicago), Making Music Together (Moscow), Nuovi Spazi Musicali (Italy), Encounter Til (Brazil) and such diverse New York concert venues as Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall, Roulette, Symphony Space and the Guggenheim Soho.
ModernWorks! made its New York debut in November 1997 at Sonic Boom 6 at the Miller Theatre of Columbia University. Subsequent appearances have included the Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse(2 seasons), the American Craft Museum and the Queensborough Public Library.
ModernWorks! debut concert, "American's in Italy" was the only Sonic Boom 6 concert chosen in its entirety for broadcast over NPR's Performance Today.
